Png Takes Silver At The Paralympics
September 15th 2008 - Digicel-sponsored athlete second in Mens 100m|
Digicel, the fastest-growing mobile network in the Pacific, is proud to have played a part in an unprecedented sporting success story for PNG. Today Francis Kompaon won the 100m silver medal at the Beijing Paralympics (1230pm Port Moresby time), on the eve of PNG Independence Day.
Clocking a time of 11.10 seconds, Kompaon took second place, equaling his own personal best set in the semi-final, which he won on Sunday night.
This is Digicel’s second major Olympic win in 2008, with Digicel-backed Usain Bolt smashing 3 world records while taking gold in at the men’s sprint events in August.
Digicel sponsored the PNG Paralympic team training camp at Goroka, prior to the Games, and also funded the Paralympic trip to Fiji for the Pacific Games earlier this year, when Team PNG took home 6 medals, including two for Francis Kompaon.
Digicel PNG CEO John Mangos paid tribute to the medal win:
“We had high hopes that Team PNG could replicate its successes earlier this year. To win a silver medal at the 100m is a stunning achievement – for Francis, for Team PNG, and for the entire nation. Digicel is proud to have helped the team make such an impression on the world stage. We look forward to greeting the team when they return to Port Moresby.”
