DIGICEL FIJI 7s TEAM ROMP HOME IN BRISBANE

-  Serevi says experience augurs well for Digicel Fiji 7s team ahead of IRB World Series

Monday 13th October, 2008 - Nadi: The Digicel Fiji Warriors put on an awesome display to win the Brisbane Fiji Rugby Day 7s at the Sunnybank Club in Queensland, Australia, at the weekend with Digicel Fiji 7s coach Waisale Serevi describing the outing as ‘very useful preparation’ for the IRB 2008-09 7s Series that starts next month.

The Digicel Fiji Warriors defeated the Uprising Resort team from Pacific Harbour 34-0 in the final to walk away with A$4,000 first prize having defeated Brisbane Fiji 26-0 in the semi-finals. From six games played, the Digicel side amassed 222 points and conceded just one try in the pool game against the Corinthians.

Serevi, who is also a Digicel Brand Ambassador, credited team effort for the win and singled out Navosa centre Iveri Lavo as his player of the tournament, and also gave credit to his two captains, Emosi Vucago and Etonia Naba.

“I would like to thank Dr Viliaseri Tuicolo and the Queensland Fijian community for the invitation,” Serevi said. “This was a great opportunity for us to expose the new players and see how well they can adapt to both the traveling and playing, and most importantly how well they gel with the experienced players.”

“I was also very happy with the outstanding defensive play and ball retention the team displayed which was around 99 percent. I believe these were our major weaknesses in the last IRB 7s Series.”
The Digicel Fiji 7s team will open their campaign to regain the IRB World 7s title when the Dubai 7s start on 28 November, though coach Serevi hopes they can attend some more warm-up tournaments beforehand.

The IRB Rugby World Cup 7s will also be held in Dubai on 5-7 March 2009 when Serevi and his men will look to retain the crown they won in 2005.
Serevi and his team played a big part in the launch of Digicel’s services in Fiji on 1 October, making a number of appearances at the Digicel stores and events around the country.
