Digicel to become the Major Commercial Sponsor of the Largest International Sevens Festival in Fiji

Thursday September 17th 2009, Fiji: Digicel, the fastest growing mobile operator in the Pacific today announced that it has secured a sponsorship agreement as the title sponsor of the Suva Rugby Festival 2010, set to take place from January 15th–January 23rd.

The announcement was made this morning at a press conference held in Digicel’s business lounge in Kadavu House, Suva. Speaking at the announcement, Digicel Fiji Chief Operating Officer Matt Davey said, “The inaugural Suva Rugby Festival in 2010 promises to be the biggest and best international rugby occasion in Fiji. Digicel’s title sponsorship of the event underpins our commitment to further developing rugby in Fiji at all levels.

With 200 international and national teams competing, the festival will cement Fiji’s position as the Pacific home of sevens rugby attracting greater tourism to the country, to the benefit of the economy. With that, Digicel is both proud and excited to be associated with the Suva Rugby Union and the Suva Rugby Festival 2010,” continued Davey.

Also present at the announcement was Chairman of the Suva Rugby Union Vilikesa Rauca, who said, “The Suva Rugby Union is incredibly fortunate to have found Digicel as the title sponsor of the inaugural Suva Rugby Festival. This project has been in our minds for some time, and all the planning we have done can now be put into action so that we host what we believe will be the biggest annual event in Fiji.”

The Suva Rugby Festival 2010 is the largest international sevens festival ever planned in Fiji and will be the first international sevens tournament in ten years.  The festival was officially launched by the Suva Rugby Union on July 1st this year as part of the build-up to its centenary celebrations in 2012.

Suva will host international sevens teams from Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and Manawatu with more teams to confirm in the coming weeks. Winners of the Suva sevens series will also have the rare chance to play against their international counterparts, giving fans the opportunity to watch some exciting rugby.

In addition to the international sevens teams attending the event, there will be in excess of 200 teams playing across 10 categories of rugby including primary and secondary schools, rugby 10’s teams, Golden Oldies, ladies and Indo-Fijian teams to name but a few.

The nine-day festival is set to rival some of Fiji’s biggest festivals with daily entertainment in the capital’s Albert Park, including the Suva Captain’s Charity dinner, a Choir competition and a parade through Suva to welcome the international teams.
