Digicel Donates Fj$50,000 To Fiji Red Cross

January 14th 2009 - Digicel commits to help flood victims

Wednesday 14th January, 2009:  Digicel, the fastest growing mobile company in the Pacific, has donated FJD$50,000 to the Fiji Red Cross to support the relief effort following the severe flooding in the western region.

Since the start of the flooding, the Red Cross has been providing support to the victims of the recent weather by distributing essential items such as water containers, dry clothing, and food packs to the evacuation centres.  This contribution from Digicel will be used to purchase further supplies and equipment to help secure continued efforts to supply essential items and provisions to the worst affected areas.

Red Cross Director General, Alison Cupit said “On behalf of the Red Cross and the many families who will be assisted by this generous donation, we thank Digicel for this gesture. This aid will give families some comfort during this distressing time and will help to ensure that the Red Cross can continue to provide essential support to those families”.

Digicel Fiji CEO, John Delves said: “We are committed to working with the Red Cross to support them in carrying out essential work in the affected regions. Above and beyond our role in keeping friends and family connected, we are committed to helping people get back on their feet.  We at Digicel are prepared to assist in whatever way we can help in the rebuilding efforts over the coming weeks.’’

In addition, Digicel is offering free credit to the value of FJD$5million to all customers to help them keep in touch with their family and friends during this time. Digicel is also donating 1,000 phones and free credit to the evacuation centres in the Western region.
