Festivities in Fiji Coincide with Landmark
10 Million Subscribers across 32 Markets Worldwide
Wednesday 30th September, 2009 Fiji – Digicel, the fastest growing telecommunications provider in the Pacific is celebrating its first birthday in Fiji. It was exactly one year ago on October 1st 2008, when Digicel launched mobile telecommunications in Fiji.
Digicel took the country by storm, from the moment of launch, by introducing competition for the first time in Fiji with first-to-market services such as per second billing, provider of the fastest nationwide mobile internet, and free 24/7 customer care. For the first time mobile communications were in reach of the majority of consumers in Fiji causing a surge in mobile penetration.
John Delves, CEO of Digicel Fiji comments, “We are delighted with our progress in Fiji. Since our launch here 12 months ago, we have exceeded expectation, now serving Fijians from Rotuma to Kadavu. We’ve done this by ensuring that our commitment to provide the best network, best service and best value is evident in everything we do – and the way in which we do it, and we would like to thank our customers for their ongoing loyalty to Digicel.”
“In addition, our recent agreement with the FRU for sponsorship of the Digicel Fiji 7’s for another 4 years, further demonstrates our long-term commitment to Fiji which we are looking forward to greatly.”
Since launching in October 2008, Digicel has expanded rapidly across Fiji with investment of FJ$150 million and employment of thousands of people in Digicel directly, or through business related activities nationwide. Digicel Fiji launched with extensive network coverage throughout the islands and brought coverage to rural areas for the first time.
Digicel Fiji’s 1st birthday celebrations are set to continue throughout the month of October beginning on October 1st when all prepaid customers will receive $2 free credit for calls and texts to other Digicel numbers. In-store promotions will take place with give-aways, on-the-spot prizes and handset deals.
In addition, at the end of June 2009, Digicel recorded 7.2 million subscribers across its 24 markets in the Caribbean and El Salvador. In terms of the recently launched businesses in Honduras and Panama, these are well ahead of expectations with 1.4 million subscribers across the two markets – while the six markets in the Pacific account for a further 1.4 million subscribers.
